Scholarship Amount

This is a full scholarship which covers 100% of tuition.

Tuition Includes

  • Round-trip international travel

  • Round-trip domestic travel

  • Placement with a carefully selected host family, recipients tend to be placed in the Tokyo/ Kanto region.

  • Orientation for scholarship recipients and parents

  • Preparatory materials

  • Mandatory Japan-specific orientation

  • Support services in host country

  • Comprehensive Insurance

  • Attendance at a Japanese high school (number of days in the high school will vary dependent on where your placement is made)

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be high school students in Walworth County, Wisconsin.

  • Students attending the following schools are eligible: Elkhorn, Badger, Big Foot, Williams Bay, Delavan-Darien, East Troy, Faith Christian, Walworth Christian, and Whitewater High Schools.

  • Students must hold a 3.0 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

  • Only US citizens may apply. Previous recipients are not eligible.

Applicants must meet the age requirements defined on the Japan country page.

Scholarship Recipients are Responsible for

  • Passport

  • Visa fees (if necessary)

  • Any excess luggage tariffs

  • Required overseas medical insurance (many insurance policies will cover students while traveling abroad)

  • Personal spending money

  • Within one month of returning home, the student must provide a report and photos detailing their exchange experience to Kikkoman.

  • Upon returning home, scholarship winners are expected to complete at least one presentation in their school or community to share their experiences, teach others about the culture in their host country, and encourage other students to participate in foreign exchange.

The Kikkoman/Walworth County, WI Scholarship is a full scholarship that includes round-trip international and domestic airline travel, placement with a carefully selected host family (usually in the Tokyo/Kanto region), regional orientation for scholarship recipients and parents, preparatory materials, mandatory Japan-specific orientation, support services in the host country, and comprehensive insurance.

To be eligible for the Kikkoman/Walworth County, WI Scholarship, students must meet the age requirements specified on the Japan country page, be a U.S. citizen, attend high school at Elkhorn, Badger, Big Foot, Williams Bay, Delavan-Darien, East Troy, Faith Christian, Walworth Christian, or Whitewater High Schools in Walworth County, WI, maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, be U.S. citizens, and have not received a YFU scholarship to Japan in the past.

A complete application for the scholarship includes an online application, one teacher recommendation, responses to three short answer essay questions, a non-refundable $10 application fee, a health certificate, school certificate, parent-student agreement, five candid photos, and one headshot.

Scholarship recipients are responsible for obtaining a passport, covering visa fees if necessary, any excess luggage tariffs, , and personal spending money. Additionally, within one month of returning home, students must provide a report and photos detailing their exchange experience to Kikkoman. They are also expected to complete at least one presentation in their school or community to share their experiences and promote cultural exchange.
