Eligibility

A partial scholarship towards the tuition to Germany Year or Semester Fall programs. Open to U.S. minority high school students with freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior class standing with demonstrated financial need. Students must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Finalists for this scholarship are selected on merit- and needs-based criteria. Students who have previously participated in a semester or year exchange in another country are not eligible for German programs and scholarships.

Scholarship Recipients are Responsible for

  • Remaining tuition after the scholarship award
  • Passport

  • Visa fees (if necessary)

  • Any excess luggage tariffs

  • Personal spending money

  • Upon returning home, scholarship winners are expected to complete at least one presentation in their school or community to share their experiences, teach others about the culture in their host country, and encourage other students to participate in foreign exchange

  • Tuition balance not covered by scholarship is due two weeks after award notification

The scholarship covers round-trip international and domestic airline travel, placement with a carefully selected host family, regional orientation for scholarship recipients and their parents, preparatory materials, support services in the host country, and comprehensive insurance.

The scholarship is open to U.S. high school students who are freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior class standing and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale. Students previously participating in a semester or year exchange in another country are not eligible for German programs and scholarships.

The scholarship is available for Fall Semester and Fall Year programs in Germany. The application deadline is February 28, 2025.

Applicants must complete an online application, submit a FACTS application for financial aid, provide a teacher recommendation, a host family letter, answer three short essay questions, and submit various documents including a health certificate and photos. There are two application fees: a $75 non-refundable YFU application fee and a $40 FACTS application fee for financial need assessment.
