Every summer, Youth For Understanding (YFU) brings together a vibrant group of future exchange students for its National Pre-Departure Orientation (NPDO), a transformative weekend designed to prepare young cultural ambassadors for life abroad. Held in Naperville, IL, at North Central College, this year’s orientation welcomed over 80 students from across the U.S. who geared up for immersive student exchange experiences in countries around the world. Through interactive workshops, heartfelt conversations, and volunteer-led sessions, YFU’s NPDO equips students with the tools they need to thrive in their host families, navigate cultural differences, and embrace the adventure of international cultural exchange.
What Is the YFU National Pre-Departure Orientation (NPDO)?
NPDO is a proud tradition and requirement of exchange students preparing to go abroad. This year, it was planned and executed by a team of 16 YFU volunteers with the assistance of YFU staff, many of whom are exchange alumni themselves. The alumni volunteers can provide the students with firsthand knowledge and experience, along with leading sessions regarding host family dynamics, handling culture shock, and intercultural communication. Some of the core activities students participated in include the team relay race, skits highlighting host family miscommunication, learning about YFU’s support system and safety guidelines, navigating stereotypes, learning how to become a student ambassador, and what makes a successful exchange student. Students were also treated to a special presentation on German culture and language by the Goethe Institut.
How Do Students Feel About Their Orientation Experiences?
Students walked away from NPDO with a newfound confidence and preparedness for what lies ahead. When asked what they thought about NPDO, one student shared, “The best part of orientation was getting to make friendships with people from all over the country, but also specifically getting to bond with our teams, who seemed to have become family in just a couple of days.” Another student appreciated what the volunteer team leaders brought to the table, saying, “Team leaders did a great job of having honest discussions with us about all of our questions and topics.” One student wrapped up their NPDO experience, stating, “It was such a great experience. I’m so glad I went to NPDO. I feel so much more prepared for my exchange year, and I can’t wait to go!”
What Happens After YFU’s National Pre-Departure Orientation?
After NPDO, students will be heading to Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Argentina, the United Kingdom, Chile, Poland, and Switzerland to experience a life-changing adventure. We want to share a special thank you to leadership team members Sam Scott, Liz Zirk, Miranda Gilgore, and Victoria Peluso for their time and dedication to making NPDO possible. Finally, thank you so much to all of the volunteers and staff of YFU and North Central College who made this transformative weekend possible!
