Kim’s Journey as a German Exchange Student to Athlete of the Year

Meet Kim, an inspiring German exchange student who has embraced a new culture and excelled in her passion for swimming. She earned the prestigious title of Girls Swimming Student Athlete of the Year. In this blog, we delve into Kim’s incredible journey, experiences, and lessons learned along the way.

A Passion For Swimming Rewarded

Kim’s excitement was palpable when she received the news of being named Athlete of the Year. “I am so grateful to be named Athlete of the Year, especially since I didn’t even know I could get it,” she shared. The recognition was a testament to her dedication and hard work in swimming, a sport that has been a significant part of her life. “Swimming has been such a big part of my life and has always managed to improve my life,” she added.

Swimming has been Kim’s passion for as long as she can remember. “Swimming has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and it’s either me in the water or standing next to the pool coaching,” she said. The sport has shaped her into a better person and team player, and has instilled a sense of responsibility in her. Kim’s love for swimming even led her to coach kids during her exchange year, further deepening her connection to the sport.

Memorable Moments and Challenges While On Exchange

Kim’s exchange year was filled with memorable moments, especially during swim meets. “Every single meet is a precious memory, but my favourite ones are where my whole (host) family came to watch me swim,” she recalled. Balancing swimming with her exchange experience was seamless for Kim, as she believes that being part of a sport is integral to the exchange experience. “Swimming has helped me make incredible friends and feel more comfortable in school,” she noted.

Host Family Connections and Life in the US

Kim’s host family was crucial in making her exchange year memorable. “My (host) family are the ones who made this year possible. Well, after my natural parents who made this year happen to begin with and supported me through everything. But I am convinced I am living with the best family in the United States, and they have made my year so special. When I get home, I am always so happy to see them. I love spending time with them in the evening when we are watching something on TV. I love every Saturday we spend together; the whole dynamic makes it perfect. I also have an excellent (host) brother who is handicapped, but he is also the biggest teacher and makes you appreciate life even more. I love listening to music and spending time with him in general!”

Living in the US exposed Kim to a different school system and cultural experiences. “The school system or school life was the most unforgettable experience because it was simply so different from what I knew,” she said. Kim enjoyed taking classes like Culinary Arts and Theater, which are not typically offered in Germany, and appreciated the concept of after-school sports and activities.

A New Perspective on the World

Kim’s exchange year broadened her horizons and changed her perspective on the world. “This year has opened my eyes and made it obvious that there is so much more out there than just my hometown,” she reflected. “It also taught me that I still have so much of my life in front of me and I can’t wait to experience all of it – the good and bad.” The experience has also shaped her aspirations, making her consider studying or working in the United States.

Advice for Future Exchange Students and Host Families

Kim encourages families to host exchange students, highlighting the mutual benefits. “Hosting an exchange student is a beautiful thing to do, and not only will the exchange student grow from it, but the host family too,” she said. For future exchange students who are athletes, Kim’s advice is to prioritize having fun and to embrace new sports without fear.

Kim’s exchange year in the US has been a transformative experience filled with achievements, cultural exchanges, and personal growth. As she prepares to return to Germany, she carries with her unforgettable memories and a newfound appreciation for the world beyond her hometown. “It was the best year of my life, and I want it to never end.”
