UN SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS YFU TRUSTEE & FORMER AMBASSADOR AS DEPUTY
SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR UNITED NATIONS
Laurence D. Wohlers tapped to protect civilians and support transition processes
in the Central African Republic
Bethesda, MD (July 2, 2014) – Youth For Understanding USA (YFU) is honored to share that a member of our Board of Trustees, Ambassador Laurence D. Wohlers, has been appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to serve as the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (Political) for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
Ambassador Wohlers has served in numerous diplomatic postings across Europe, Africa, and Asia, as well as in Washington DC. Prior to this appointment, he served as the US Ambassador to the Central African Republic from August 2010 through August 2013. He was the Senior Advisor for International Activities at The Smithsonian Institution, Chief of Staff and Executive Assistant to the Under Secretary of State for Public Affairs and Public Diplomacy, Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at the US Mission to the European Union and Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs at the US Embassy in Moscow. Ambassador Wohlers received an MS from the National War College and a BA from Washington University in St. Louis.
As an expert with comprehensive experience in international affairs, Ambassador Wohlers joined YFU’s Board of Trustees this past February. Helping to further strengthen YFU’s in international relations and cross-cultural communications.
