Bastian von Beschwitz is Senior Economist in the International Finance Division at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington DC, where he specializes in foreign exchange markets. His academic research focuses on short selling, banking, and corporate finance. Several of his research papers have been published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Financial Economics.

Prior to joining the Fed, Bastian earned a PhD in Finance from INSEAD, an MSc in Accounting and Finance from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a BSc in Business from WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management. During his studies, he spent time at The Wharton School and at Universidad Torcuata Di Tella in Buenos Aires.

Bastian grew up in Ratingen, Germany and spent a year in Alaska as a YFU exchange student. Subsequently, he worked for 15 years as a volunteer for YFU Germany, organizing and leading seminars, workshops, and interviews for prospective students. He also served on the committee that revised the volunteer structure and by-laws of YFU Germany. For six of those years, he was Speaker of YFU Germany’s Finance Committee, reviewing budgets and annual reports for the organization.
