From Exchange Student to Fiancée: A Study Abroad Love Story

A study abroad love story that lead to a proposal.

Studying abroad isn’t just about learning a new language or exploring a different culture. It’s a journey of self-discovery, personal growth, and unforgettable relationships. For many students, it sparks new career paths. For a lucky few, it leads to something even more profound: a love story. That was the case for Alex Maestrelli, a former YFU exchange student from Italy who studied in the United States in 2016.

Choosing YFU

Alex had carefully considered her options before choosing YFU Italy. “Most organizations for exchange students in Italy are very business-oriented,” she explained. “With YFU Italy, it felt like they actually cared for us! They were extremely friendly and were always willing to help and answer questions.” Her heart was set on the United States from the beginning. “I’ve always known I wanted to go to the States because I had been there on vacation and it felt right being there. It felt like a more open-minded and less traditional place compared to where I grew up.”

A Life-Changing Exchange Year in Ohio

She was placed in Ohio, where her exchange experience began to unfold. Among the many new faces, one stood out: Micaiah. “He was a grade above me, so when I was there studying, we only talked a couple of times,” Alex recalled. “I actually had a crush on him while I was there, and found out later he was also interested. But I was too shy to talk to someone popular at the time.”

Building Friendships and Cherished Memories Abroad

Though their romance didn’t begin during her exchange year, Alex built deep friendships and cherished memories. One of her favorites was her first bonfire with friends from the school band. “That’s not something we can do in Italy, especially growing up in a city.” Prom was another highlight. “Everyone singing Piano Man in a circle at the end of prom felt really special and a bonding experience!”

How Studying Abroad Shaped Alex’s Career Path

Returning home to Italy, Alex found that her exchange year had left a lasting impression. “It made me reach a level of English above average, which is useful no matter what. It made me realize that I wanted to continue studying languages beyond high school, which led me to pursue a degree in Translation and Interpreting.” After graduating, she returned to the U.S. to visit her best friend, Sabrina, and that’s when fate stepped in.

Reconnecting with a High School Crush

While visiting, Alex reconnected with Micaiah. Although they had followed each other on social media, they hadn’t kept in touch. But something clicked. “As soon as we started talking again, we both felt the connection as if we had known each other our whole lives.” They shared that they had both harbored feelings for each other during high school, but shyness had kept them apart.

A Cross-Cultural Relationship Blossoms

This time, things were different. Their relationship blossomed, and they began building a life together that bridges cultures and continents. On November 03, 2023, Alex and Micaiah got engaged. They’ll be married on September 10, 2025. “I’m Italian, so the cultural differences might not seem that big, but there are some small things where we definitely have to remind each other that we come from different backgrounds and learn from each other.”

The Lasting Impact of Cultural Exchange

Reflecting on her journey, Alex shared how studying abroad transformed her life. “It gives you a completely different outlook on life and what it feels like to adjust to a new environment. It also gives you a new home and a safe place, no matter what. I found not only my future husband but also some of my best friends. Despite being away from each other for many years, our bond didn’t change. It’s truly a gift.”

A Love Story That Crosses Borders

From a shy exchange student to a confident graduate and bride-to-be, Alex’s story is a beautiful reminder of the lifelong impact of cultural exchange. Her experience with YFU didn’t just open doors; it also opened her heart. Alex’s story is a beautiful reminder that the effects of studying abroad go far beyond academics. It’s about the people you meet, the places that shape you, and the unexpected ways your life can change. What began as a leap into the unknown became a journey filled with friendship, growth, and love. For Alex and Micaiah, their exchange year planted the seeds of a lifelong connection, one that blossomed across time and distance. As they prepare to say “I do,” their story stands as a testament to the magic of cultural exchange and the lasting bonds it creates. Here’s to love that crosses borders, and to the adventures that bring us home.
