YFU Committed To Ensuring Program Quality and Exchange Student Safety

As a non-profit organization supported by volunteers in local communities and affiliate Youth For Understanding (YFU) organizations in more than sixty countries, YFU is committed to the highest standards of providing quality programs and ensuring student safety.

A leader in exchange programming since its founding in 1951, YFU USA annually sponsors more than 2,500 high school students and 160 college students in exchange programs in the United States and abroad. As student safety is the organization’s top priority, YFU USA is structured to include numerous safety nets and layers of protection to ensure the welfare and safety of all program participants. YFU USA employs rigorous standards for host family screening and selection, including mandatory in-home interviews, reference checks, and criminal background checks.  YFU USA secures written school enrollment permission, conducts regular participant orientation programs, and ensures monthly contact by trained representatives to supervise and support participants while on program.

YFU USA is pleased to be a sponsor in good standing with the US Department of State J-1 Visa Designation Office and is a fully-listed organization with the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET), an industry accrediting organization.

YFU has been recognized in the international education community for its commitment to program quality and student safety. For further information regarding YFU program operations in this area, please contact Neil Routman at nroutman@yfu.org.

Youth For Understanding (YFU) prepares young people for their responsibilities and opportunities in a changing, interdependent world.
