There are four steps to becoming a YFU exchange student. YFU USA will be your partner throughout the entire process. Click on the map to learn more.
Application
Apply online or
by mail.
Submit application with program and country choice. Apply to win a scholarship!
PREPARATION
Upon acceptance by YFU USA you prepare for your journey: Obtain a passport and insurance; attend a pre-departure orientation.
Student Exchange
Immerse yourself in a different culture, language and home for the duration of your program.
RETURN
Return home with lifelong friendships and memories. Many continue involvement as YFU volunteers.
Step 1: APPLICATION
YFU Admissions Counselors are here to help. A YFU admissions counselor will be assigned to work with you throughout the entire application process to help you select the country, duration and scholarships to fit your needs. In addition to your written application, scholarship semi-finalists and all regular applicants will have an in-person interview.
Step 2: PREPARATION
If selected as a result of your application, you will be spending time getting ready to live in another country! YFU USA will contact you with additional instructions and orientation materials (including an invitation to a pre-departure orientation) and travel information.
Step 3: STUDENT EXCHANGE
Your exchange program begins when you leave for your host country. You’ll soon find yourself fully immersed in the culture and language of your host country. Your YFU host family will do their best to make you feel comfortable in your new home. They will provide you with a loving and supportive environment, explain social customs and family rules, and help you adapt. A local YFU representative will also be available to guide you through your exchange. On academic programs, you will attend a local high school in your host country and have an opportunity to make new friends. You’ll discover more about yourself than you ever imagined.
Step 4: RETURN
At the conclusion on your YFU program, you will return home from the learning adventure of a lifetime. Even though your exchange program concludes, you will bring home lifelong memories, lasting friendships, and a better understanding and unique perspective of another culture. YFU USA programs have a lasting, life-changing impact that will influence your choices and opportunities for your future. As a YFU Alumna/us you will have the opportunity to stay involved with YFU as a volunteer or perhaps your family will host an exchange student.
